UK credit cards for US citizens

A UK credit card turns on UK credit history, not US citizenship. A newly arrived American is treated like any new arrival: thin file, low limits, then it builds.

Card issuers care whether you can repay and whether you have a UK track record. Being a US person does not count against you; having no UK credit history does. The same FATCA reporting applies as on any account, and it does not affect approval.

The practical route is to build a file first. A UK current account, on the electoral roll where eligible, a few months of UK direct debits, and often a starter or credit-builder card before a mainstream one. Within a year most arrivals qualify for standard cards.

Start with a current account, which is the foundation of a UK credit file, and see FATCA for the status question every issuer asks.
